“This movie is very much about our time now and the state of our culture,” she says. And while many have been quick to draw comparisons to that other movie about music, love, and the perils of fame, The Bodyguard, Mbatha-Raw believes the two couldn’t be further apart.
Saved from a suicide attempt by a young, kind cop played by the charismatic Nate Parker, their friendship eventually blossoms into a full-on relationship. “For me it was kind of essential to go there and create that person that is very real in pop culture and the music industry.”īeyond the Lights follows her character Noni’s ascent into fame and subsequent descent into depression and self-destructiveness-a path followed by so many celebrity icons before her. “Half of the time I felt like I was in drag,” says Mbatha-Raw over the phone last week. But for her latest movie, Beyond the Lights, she’s donning a very different kind of costume: With her delicate beauty and signature ringlets hidden beneath a straight purple wig and a face full of makeup, she’s practically unrecognizable as an R&B superstar à la Rihanna. Those already familiar with English actress Gugu Mbatha-Raw will most likely remember her in corsets and eighteenth-century gowns as a mixed-race aristocrat in the film Belle.
